Chicken in a Book Store

Posted on October 20, 2008 by - Community Events

I’m working on a major cleaning of my studio, as I’m moving it 6 blocks away.  Not a big move, but a much needed cleaning project.  This past weekend I visited The Wild Rumpus Book Store in Linden Hills neighborhood of Minneapolis.  It truly is a store to visit if you enjoy books and particularly childrens books.  It is a space designed for imaginations young and old, and best of all the only book store I’ve ever shopped in and had to be careful not to step on a chicken.  A beautiful chicken in the sunlight, pecking away and cleaning up crumbs and rocks on the floor near the door way.  This particular bird had a trail of kids following after it, as it hopped over to sun itself in the window sill amid the stacks of colorful books for children.  What a perfect way to spend a Saturday afternoon in October.  (I should mention you will also meet chinchillas and lizards if you visit the store!  And the Scary books have thier own house with the bookstore.)

The Graveyard Book

Last night the Red Balloon Book Shop in St Paul MN hosted a reading from the Author Neil Gaiman.  This was the last night of his tour reading from his new book, “The Graveyard Book”.  Friend & fellow artist Nouka Yang and I thoroughly enjoyed the evening!  We did a little sketching during the reading, I always enjoy a good book & recommend you check out this new book, perfect to curl up with on these cool October evenings we have been having in MN.

This week I’ll be placing the finishing touches on paintings for the St Paul Art Crawl which begins on Friday October 10th.  This small little square canvas is 10x10inches, acrylic on Canvas and will be part of the “Energy” Theme Wall at the Lower Town Lofts Artists Coop.  The rest of my paintings will be up in the 6th Floor Hallway at the Rossmor.  Check out the MAP for directions.

I had a very fortunate experience this past week to accompany Phyllis on a trip to Nicaragua to visit a few of the farms that Equal Exchange works with.  I encountered great hospitality and an education that was inspiring in all aspects of my work.  In a time when many of us are concerned about the environment, our food system and our global economy it is important to know the effect our buying choices can have.  For more information on Fair Trade and current concerns check out

Thank you to ECRAC & the State Theater of Eau Claire

Just wanted to thank the Eau Claire Regional Arts Center and the State Theater of Eau Claire for hosting a great event and benefit night last Friday, can´t believe it has already been one week!  liveART was a great evening of a variety of artists on the stage of the State Theater creating and and a silent auction going on during the creation process.  Although they are currently raising funds for an expansion project, I´m hoping they can make a tradition out of the liveART event!  It really was great to see some many familure creative faces in action.  Volumeone posted photos from the event too, including some of my painting of the theater further along, check it out here.
